April Community Initiative Of The Month

For the month of April, our Community Initiative of the Month is the Childen's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in support of reaching their goal to purchase a Long Term Care Ventilator!

Since 1971, the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba has inspired and rallied donors to improve and help save young lives. The vision of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is to be the charity of choice devoted to funding excellence in child health care and child health research. The mission of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is to improve the health of children everywhere, by inspiring our community to support excellence in child health care and child health research.

With the support of individual donors and corporate partners, the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba ensures that there is a reliable, consistent, and significant flow of funds available to augment government funding of Children’s Hospital – HSC Winnipeg. Your philanthropy keeps the system robust and successful by increasing the hospital’s capacity to run important and innovative programs and acquire state-of-the-art equipment.

The long-term care ventilator supports medically fragile children in the HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital Pediatric Special Care Unit (PSCU). The growing numbers of premature births in Manitoba, Northwest Ontario and Nunavut means there may not be enough equipment to meet the growing demands of premature births in the province.

Medical advancements have made it possible for premature infants to survive as early as 23 weeks gestation, when normal gestation is 40 weeks. As a result, these children may have complex medical issues and respiratory conditions. Other children who have suffered trauma, neuromuscular disease or respiratory disease also access this service. In the time of COVID-19 and with annual flu and respiratory illness seasons coming, having this equipment available is more important than ever.

Portable ventilators are life-support equipment that is essential for the survival of patients at Children’s Hospital. At any given time, the hospital needs eight ventilators, which enables medically stable kids to go home with the important equipment they need to breathe. Each unit costs approximately $15,000.

This year the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is celebrating its 50th anniversary and what that really means to their team at the Foundation is that they are celebrating 50 years of community impact. It is the community of donors, sponsors, volunteers, supporters such as media and the Foundation Families that ensure the best medical research, tools and care programs are here for the kids needing Children’s Hospital.

A portion of sales from all cupcakes at Academy, The Forks and over SkipTheDishes will be donated to the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba Long Term Ventilator campaign throughout the month of April.
